Energy Efficiency in Action – Syunik Tour Recap

On July 18–19, media representatives joined a tour to Kapan and Kajaran, organized by “De-risking and Scaling-up Investment in Energy Efficient Building Retrofits” UNDP-GCF project in Armenia, the Ministry of Environment and its PIU, to see how energy efficient retrofits are transforming buildings, communities and improving the lives of the residents.

“Most of old buildings lacked insulation. Now, with these upgrades, energy loss is down by up to 60%,” said UNDP RR in Armenia Natia Natsvlishvili.

In Kapan, journalists visited Kindergarten #1 - a warm, safe space for kids thanks to EE upgrades.

EPIU Director Armen Yesoyan stressed the climate benefits:
“Less energy means fewer emissions. That is critical for Armenia’s climate goals.”

According to Gor Tadevosyan, the first deputy head of the Kapan community, the co-financing of energy-efficient measures by the program significantly reduces the financial burden on the community.

Manvel Paramazyan, the head of the Qajaran community, states that residents are very satisfied with the program's cooperation, noting a significant decrease in electricity costs and an overall improvement in the city's appearance.

So far: 45 buildings retrofitted across Syunik with co-financing of the State subvention programme, the community and UNDP-GCF Project. Still 14 more to come in Kapan and Kajaran during 2025-26.
